Hi, I am Tommy Hor. I have worked in IT for decades, culminating in my last role as Chief IT Officer until I stepped down in 2020. Including my earlier role as Head of IT, I believe I was the longest-serving chief in IT for the same organization among my peers. I used to describe my job as “life-shortening” due to the chronic stress, or more accurately, “career-killing” because of the rapid technological advancements. It is clear in our profession that if we do not adapt to changes and pursue new knowledge, we will soon become irrelevant to modern industries.
Throughout my career, I have had the invaluable opportunity to work with many technology principals, systems integrators, consultants, business leaders, project sponsors, IT sales professionals, practitioners, and general users. Together, we confronted the status quo and pioneered novel solutions while bearing the significant responsibility of keeping many systems running smoothly.
The purpose of creating this blog is to reach out to a wider audience with a focus on Enterprise IT. I hope to recollect and compile my work experience into useful references for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of the applications and challenges of technologies in a large enterprise. Whether you are a business leader with little trust in your in-house IT organization or a technology salesperson pursuing a prospective enterprise client, I hope my insights can shed light on the often less-spoken priorities of IT and its impact on large-scale technology implementations across an entire enterprise. Knowledge is not unique, but experience is. It would be a bonus if I could inspire you to join the IT workforce, which, in my mind, is adventurous, fulfilling, and rewarding.
Writing is a rigorous thinking process that forces you to re-evaluate and clarify your thoughts before making decisions. Personally, I will benefit from writing because it requires further reflection and research into the subjects, providing a means to acquire new knowledge and skills.
Best wishes,
Tommy
